Join Other TAWA Artists in Hiltonia

There is time to join several other TAWA artists as they exhibit work during the first Hiltonia House Tour, scheduled to be held on Saturday May 5th, 2012, from 12:00 noon through 5:00 pm (rain or shine) and feature over ten houses throughout Hiltonia.
Hiltonia, a residential community of 315 homes located approximately 3 miles from downtown Trenton in the western part of the City, was created in the early 1920’s by Samuel Hilton, a local developer. The original layout of Hiltonia features stately homes, wide, tree-lined avenues, large landscaped lots, with neighborhood boundaries of a canal, Cadwalader Park, and state-owned lands. Today, the beauty of Hiltonia is in the diversity of its housing stock—from fieldstone Tudors to brick Dutch colonials, Cotswold cottages, large split levels to mid-century modern ranches, as well as attached townhouses (semis), built first as workers’ cottages to provide the funding needed to jump start the rest of the development.
Artists interested in participating should contact the president of the Hiltonia Association, Elise Mannella, at Nella1454@gmail.com.

CALL FOR TRENTON MAKES SUMMER SHOW IN NEW YORK AND TRENTON

The Trenton Artists Workshop Association (TAWA) invites regional visual artists to participate in “Trenton Makes” a juried 2012 summer exhibition to be held in Trenton and New York City.
The simultaneous two-city show is a first for the 30 year old company that has been an important part of New Jersey’s capital city’s cultural life.
While know for exhibitions at the Trenton City Museum, New Jersey State Museum, and Artworks, TAWA has also produced the ground breaking Eyes on Trenton festival, created artists exchange with the Soviet Union, and launched other city arts initiatives and programs.
“Trenton Makes” will be held at The Trenton City Museum and The Prince Street Gallery in New York City
The project reflects TAWA’s interest in creating exciting opportunities to bring regional artists together to create, excel, strengthen the arts community, and find new venues for expression.
The “Trenton Makes” juror is New York City based art critic and artist Gerard Haggerty.
Haggerty has written hundreds of reviews, articles and monographs for ARTnews and other venues.  He is also the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Ford Foundation.
Artists wishing to submit work for “Trenton Makes” will find the prospectus and guidelines on the Trenton Artists Workshop Association Web site tawa-nj.org.
Submissions are accepted to May 31.
Selections will be made and announced in early June.  The exhibition begins later that month.
The Trenton Artists Workshop Association, founded in 1979 to promote the arts in the greater Trenton area, is supported in part by the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission through funding from the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment of the Arts.

CORRECTIONS!

There were a few problems with the last TAWA email notice.

One was something that happened during the electronic process of transferring info posted on the blog to the automatic email notice.  That's when the copy was attacked by exclamation points and other configurations.  Go figure.

The other was that a typo created a loss of character for the email to register for the Saturday, March 24 workshops.  The working email is tawaexhibits@aol.com .

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Here is a repeat of the info on Aubrey Kauffman's New York exhibition:

TRENTON CULTURAL RESOURCES NETWORK SESSION

The second Trenton Cultural Resources Network gathering session is scheduled for Saturday, March 10 from 2 – 4 PM at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 400 Hamilton Avenue, Trenton (on the corner of Chestnut and Hamilton Avenues, across from Columbus Park).   This session is an opportunity for area artists and cultural leaders to explore ways to cultivate shared successes, address shared frustrations, and set the agenda for further discussions and activities.  Registration is requested by contacting trentonculturalresourcesnetwork@gmail.com

GIVE US A HAND OR TWO

On Saturday, March 10, TAWA members will be installing the CAPITAL CITY COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION at Artworks.  This is the first time that we can remember when four central New Jersey art departments were brought together to have a show in our state's capital.  It's a good idea for a variety of reasons.  However, with all good ideas, it doesn't happen by itself.  We have students and artists coming to Artworks at 10 a.m. this Saturday, March 10.  However, we may need some additional assistance.  If you are available, please drop us a line at tawaexhibits@aol.com and let us know (leaving name, phone number).   We'll know more by the end of the week.   If you want to drop in, that would be fine too.  It's always good when artists show up to help show art.   Thanks.  Dan Aubrey

FYI -- Artists Needed to Help NJ Water Project

One Barrel at a Time Co-op 2012

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program is coordinating the “One Barrel at a Time Co-op,” where artists beautify rain barrels to be auctioned off to the public.
The goal of the “One Barrel at a Time Co-op” is to help the environment by having residents bid on beautiful rain barrels that help save water and reduce rain water from entering the storm drain system, thereby preventing flooding and pollution from entering New Jersey’s lakes and streams. By engaging local artists, we hope to make rain barrels more appealing to the general public while bringing local art to a wider audience.

TAWA is supported in part by the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission, through funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Art/New Jersey Department of State, a Partner Agency on the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders
